Events and Activities
In a typical year, we hold many social and fundraising events throughout the year. Seventh and eighth graders vote on a social event to be held in the spring, which might be a dance or a trip to a trampoline gym.
If you have an idea for an event, please contact us.
Backyard Movie Night
We host a family-friendly movie under the stars (weather permitting) each fall, with pizza and other snacks for sale.
Bingo
We hold family bingo once a year, usually in the winter.
Book Fairs
Scholastic book fairs are held twice a year, in the spring and fall. Students visit the fair with their classes and select books for their wish lists. During the book fair, classes collect coins for "Coins War" and shoppers are asked to round up their purchases for "All for Books." These donations help us purchase books for our library and for RIS students who otherwise couldn't afford them. Teachers also fill "wish list" boxes; families can purchase books from these boxes for classroom libraries.
Early-Release Movies
On most early-release Wednesdays, we show a movie after school for lower-school students. Upper-school students are encouraged to volunteer.
Eight-Grade Graduation Celebration
In early June, eighth graders spend a few hours at Chelsea Piers and enjoy pizza and cake.
Fall Fête and Silent Auction
Our biggest fundraiser, held in November
Ice-Cream Social
Our two ice-cream socials are held in conjunction with family night at the book fair. Browse the books and then stop by for a sweet treat.
Luau
Our annual luau for fifth and sixth graders is held in the spring and includes pizza and a DJ.
Meetings
We hold board meetings every month and general meetings about eight times during the school year.
Monster Mash
Fifth- and sixth-graders don costumes and join us for pizza, a DJ and a costume costume. This is usually held the Friday before Halloween.
New-Family Breakfast
All parents and caregivers new to RIS are encouraged to join us for coffee, tea and breakfast in September. This is a great opportunity to ask questions and learn more about RIS and the PTO.
New-Family Playdates
Play dates are organized for incoming kindergarten and other new families. This is an opportunity to meet other families with children entering RIS in the fall. Playdates are usually held in July and August.
School Photos
Individual and class photos are taken in the fall.
Silent Auction
Held semi-annually, this is our biggest fundraiser.
"Who We Are" Community Potluck
Our community potluck is a wonderful chance for RIS families to contribute dishes based on their heritage. Families are asked to contribute a type of dish based on grade. This event is usually held in the winter.
Yearbook
We produce upper- and lower-school yearbooks that are sold in the spring. We always need pictures; if you take any during the year, please send them to therisyearbook@gmail.com.
